A Serving of Vegetables, Anyone?

Yesterday afternoon we were listening to Keeping the Beat!, a music CD I purchased from CHC last year (because I don't have John Stossel offering me musical guidance). It's a lively collection of classical pieces we've come to enjoy.

I was organizing our CDs and DVDs, which had been unpacked by hands much smaller than mine several weeks ago. Yes, I had many more important tasks to accomplish, but every time I opened the armoire doors, the jumbled mess smacked me in the face. Sometimes you just have to conquer the immediate molehill before you can even begin to think about climbing the mountain. (And sometimes you are just looking for a distraction. But I digress.)

Charlie and Jacinta were sitting nearby, quietly building with Duplos. When the first few measures of Eine kleine Nachtmusik pierced the air, Charlie immediately lifted his head in excited anticipation and proclaimed, "Daniel!" No...sorry, Charlie...just Mozart. If you have listened to Veggie Tunes even a fraction of the number of times it's been inflicted on me, this summer alone, then you will know exactly what he meant. King Darius Suite opens with the same measures.

This little musical faux pas carried my mind to a time earlier this year. It was the early spring in Belgium, and my newly three-year-old boy was completely infatuated with Veggie Tales. He would beg to watch a VT video every day, which of course was not permitted, but whenever the video pick was his, we all knew what the genre would be. There were no restrictions on listening to the CD though, unless it started to interfere with my sanity, and listen he did.

I recorded him singing the opening theme song on video and intended to share it here but never found the time to figure out how to do it. Yesterday I was reminded to make the time. Without further ado, here is my bonny prince Charlie, about six months younger than now. I think it will show why I also am completely infatuated, but not with Veggie Tales.

Some kids listen to Shostakovich; mine like Big Ideas. Oh well. I suppose if we end up in the same Place, and enjoy the ride along the way, it doesn't matter all that much.

Okay, that is just TOO cute. Daughter Cate agrees. And that little eye roll he threw in for good measure!

Be still my heart.
