I wish I could ask my mother what she was thinking when she dressed me like that. On picture day, no less! And did they not have a day scheduled for retakes?
As you can see, very early in my life, the seed was planted for educating my children at home.
I did not like kindergarten one bit. I couldn't understand why I had to leave my brothers and sister to go talk about colors and shapes with a bunch of strangers. I wanted to be home where all the action was. It didn't help that I, very shy and mousey, was completely intimidated by my teacher. Mrs. Brown had taught my father, which meant that she was not exactly a sweet young spring chick. The year after I was in her class, she consistently called my brother by my father's name. Come on, Lady, that was twenty-nine years ago. Get over him. I wonder if she is still teaching at Lloyd Elementary.
Alas, my mother knew nothing about home education, and I honestly don't think she would have chosen it if she had. Little by little, I surrendered to the inevitability of my doom. By first grade, I actually liked school. Of course, it helped to be taught by Miss Aulissio, who was a sweet young spring chick. Not to mention that I was earning stars on the chart left and right for perfect worksheets, gaining me blissful privileges like passing out the papers and erasing the blackboard.
Or maybe it was just my new haircut that made me happy. I can't remember.

And yes, I know, that I should not be breaking my blogging fast...again...but this one is for my blessedly sanguinesque daughter, Elena, who just hates it when I get all serious on this blog. When I asked her what she thought of my post about the car accident, she wrinkled her nose and said, "Sort of dark and morbid, but I suppose it is Lent."
Happy Valentine's Day to all of my dear friends! You are loved.

Those photos are precious! I kind of love the first shirt, by the way. :)
Oh yes...I have very similar pictures (minus the hair cut...lol)all the way up to high school in fact.
Diane,
You are hysterical. It is very easy to see where Charlie gets his frown from!
I, too, must say that I think the first shirt is cute! I'm also wondering if your poor beleagured mother let you choose your own shirt? Or perhaps she saved you from some other crazy outfit that you really wanted to wear, thus the explanation for the frown???
I personally loved kindergarten. I loved it so much that I had perfect attendance and was given a book at the end of the year, called "Harry the Dirty Dog." My teacher's name was Mrs. Eiffler. I have often wondered if it was her name and the fact that is sounds like the name of that huge tower in Paris that made me want to study French!
However, anyway you slice it, you were a cute little kid. I am sure people were forever commenting on those baby blues...
Peace,
Sara B!
Oh Sweetie, you are loved too! What a funny, wonderful post--and VERY TELLING.
Perhaps we should do a carnival of kindergarten photos...
Above all, don't apologize for breaking your blog fast. Did you ask ME if I wanted to fast from your blog?!! Truly, Elena is right in that it IS Lent, but our Lord did say that when we fast we shouldn't be all sad & sulky and this happy post is the perfect pick-me-up.
And finally, without wanting to seem too much of a touchy-feely, feel-good Catholic, I do think that the ultimate goal of Lent is to grow in love.
You help me to do that, daily.
PS. I prefer the ponytails to the pixie cut, though I could do without the sulk. That's so not the you I know!
I love these pics! I second the comment about this post being a "pick-me-up"...and several previous posts of yours have been also! (With a few sniffles thrown in...but those were happy tears:)
Blessings,
marianne
Oh my goodness! I can soooooo see where Charlie gets his good looks! Look at your gorgeous eyes!!!!
I'll dig up my pic - for some reason, I remember pig tails and then some shag cut with a pink dress with a tulip on the front!
I've been wanting to write to you about the car accident and have been praying for you and my dear, darling little friend, Mariana! I am soooo glad you're all okay!
I'm also trying to get a little card in the mail to you!
LOVE and HUGS to you and yours, friend!!!
Diane I love that shirt! I think Mom must have taken it from my drawer.
I can't believe you girls remember your teachers by name. I can't even picture their faces. How funny life is.
Marissa just walked past the computer and said, " wait a minute who is that in the picture?" Me - "It's Aunt Diane as a child." Her response, "woooow..."
